Symbian Mobile Phones

Symbian OS was designed for mobile devices, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, developed by Symbian Ltd. It was a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although a non-productized x86 port existed.

Symbian Foundation, an independent non-profit organisation was established on June 24, 2008. The foundation began operating during the first half of 2009. Foundation membership is open to all organizations. Symbian OS and its associated user interfaces S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) were contributed by their owners to the foundation with the objective of creating the Symbian platform as royalty-free, open source software. The process of publishing the source code under the Eclipse Public License (EPL) was slated for completion in 2010.

There are many devices that used Symbian OS:
+ In 2000 we saw Ericsson R380, it was the first commercially available phone based on Symbian OS.
+ Nokia Series 80 (S80) e.g Nokia 9500 Communicator
+ Devices with UIQ interface used for PDAs by Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola.
+ In 2002 Nokia S60 interface started producing such as Nokia 7650, Nokia 6600, etc. Until nowadays we are aware of Nseries (N95, N97, etc), Eseries (E51, E63, E71, E90 and so on).
+ Nokia Series 90 such as Nokia 7710 in 2004.
+ Mobile handsets using MOAP(S) interface: Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Sony Ericsson and Sharp phones for NTT DoCoMo in Japan, using an interface developed specifically for DoCoMo's FOMA "Freedom of Mobile Access" network brand. This UI platform is called MOAP "Mobile Oriented Applications Platform" and is based on the UI from earlier Fujitsu FOMA models.

Sebelum PT Smart Telecom (Smart) menjadi operator provider pertama di Indonesia yang meluncurkan BlackBerry versi CDMA, nama StarOne dari Indosat sempat digadang akan mengeluarkan hal serupa.

Terlepas dari itu, BlackBerry berbasis jaringan Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) memang masih menjadi barang baru di Indonesia, dan konsumen pun masih bertanya-tanya, apakah BlackBerry CDMA bisa sebagus BlackBerry GSM dengan tarif pemakaian yang lebih murah?
Head of Device Technology and Special Projects PT Smart Telecom, Tom Alamas Dinharsa mengatakan, Smart dengan Research In Motion (RIM) memilih handset BlackBerry Curve 8330 untuk mendukung layanan CDMA. Curve 8330 sebagai versi CDMA dari keluarga Curve mampu mendukung teknologi jaringan EVDO yang selama ini dimiliki dan dikembangkan Smart.

Sebagai famili baru keluarga besar BlackBerry, Curve 8330 memiliki perangkat keras yang sama dengan pendahulunya, Curve 8300 dan 8320. Curve 8330 dilengkapi dengan kamera 2 megapiksel, global positioning system (GPS), peranti lunak BlackBerry E-Mail, Bluetooth 2.0 dengan A2DP, peramban HTML, dan pemutar multimedia.

E-mail, sebagai salah satu layanan utama BlackBerry, didukung dengan baik oleh handset ini. “Curve 8330 bisa melayani push e-mail, integrasi dengan e-mail korporasi. Pengaturan dan pengelolaan e-mail bisa dilakukan dengan mudah, termasuk untuk mengirim dan menerima e-mail secara cepat.

BlackBerry Curve 8330 juga mendukung pesan singkat (SMS), pesan multimedia (MMS), dan pesan instan, termasuk kontak, kalender, note, task, pengawal password, kalkulator, dan permainan seperti BrickBreaker. Ponsel ini bisa melakukan sinkronisasi dengan komputer bila diperlukan, termasuk dengan iCal dan aplikasi buku alamat pada sistem operasi Mac OS X.
Selain GPS, ponsel ini mendukung A-GPS untuk bernavigasi dengan bantuan sinyal seluler. RIM menyediakan BlackBerry Maps di dalamnya, namun tanpa pemandu suara.

BlackBerry Curve memakai chipset Qualcomm MSM6550, yang bekerja pada 225 MHz, sebuah chipset dari keluarga ARM9. Salah satu dilema pada chipset buatan Qualcomm ini adalah ia dibuat built-in dengan GPS namun kecepatan prosesnya lebih lambat.

Namun dari seabreg keunggulan, masih ada beberapa kelemahan, di antaranya Curve 8330 tak memiliki Wi-Fi, yang menjadi ganjalan bagi ponsel pintar ini, karena keluarga Curve yang memiliki Wi-Fi saat ini hanya 8320.

Selain itu, harga berlangganan yang ditawarkan Smart hanya Rp140.000 per bulan atau Rp5.000 per hari untuk menjelajahi internet tanpa batas, sebenarnya bukan tawaran yang lebih murah dibandingkan tawaran dari provider lain berbasis GSM. Namun sebagai alternatif pilihan, BlackBerry CDMA memang layak untuk dimiliki.
